Remove an IT policy from a BlackBerry smartphone
Tuesday, 07 October 2008

To remove an IT policy from a BlackBerry smartphone, the administrator of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server must perform the following steps:

  1. Create a blank IT policy with only the Remote Wipe Reset to Factory Defaults in the Security Policy Group set to True.
  2. Assign the IT policy to the BlackBerry smartphone.
  3. In BlackBerry Manager, in the left pane, click BlackBerry Domain.
  4. On the Global tab, click Edit Properties.
  5. Click IT Policy.
  6. Assign the Remote Wipe Reset to Factory Defaults IT policy rule to the BlackBerry smartphone user account to remove the IT policy and reset the BlackBerry smartphone to factory defaults.

Prior to BlackBerry Enterprise Server software version 4.1.4, remote removal of an IT policy from a BlackBerry smartphone by an administrator was not possible because after activation on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, the BlackBerry smartphone retrieved the IT policy and locked it in a read-only state that prevented its removal.

With the release of BlackBerry Enterprise Server software version 4.1.4 and BlackBerry Device Software 4.2.2, the Remote Wipe Reset to Factory Defaults IT policy rule allows administrators to remove the IT policy from a BlackBerry smartphone.

When an administrator applies the Remote Wipe Reset to Factory Defaults IT policy rule to a BlackBerry smartphone user account, the following actions occur on the BlackBerry smartphone:

  • All data is erased
  • All third-party applications are removed
  • The IT policy is removed
