Windows Server 2003 enables you to use group policy to create a message that users will see before they attempt to log on to your domain. You can define this message at either the domain or organizational unit (OU) level. You might choose to define a message at the OU level if you want to display different messages for different groups of users.
- To define a message at the domain level, open the Default Domain Policy in either Active Directory Users And Computers or Group Policy Management Console.
- Next, in the console tree, select the \Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\Security Options object.
- In the details pane, double-click on Interactive Logon: Message Title For Users Attempting To Log On.
- Verify that the Define This Policy Setting check box is selected.
- In the available text box, type a title for the message box users will see.
- Click OK when you're done.
- Next, double-click on Interactive Logon: Message Text For Users Attempting To Log On.
- Verify that the Define This Policy Setting In The Template check box is selected.
- In the text box, type the message you want users to see.
- Click OK to save your changes.
If you want to define a message at the OU level instead of the domain level, either create or edit a group policy that's assigned to the OU. In the group policy, modify these same two settings to define a message that will be displayed on all computers within the OU. Note: Regardless of whether you define a logon message at the domain or OU level, your users will see this message only after they restart their computers.
