Some users of prerequisites for the new Vista Service Pack update (SP1) have reported that the software has crippled their machines, reports a computing website.
Microsoft has begun investigating the reports that two updates for SP1 cause the computer to constantly reboot when it is part way through the upload process, says Computer World UK.
The fault was reported to occur during "Step 3 of 3" in the installation process when the computer hangs and then reboots.
"[It] reboots ad infinitum," said Frank Melk on the Microsoft support newsgroup.
The website has said that other users have reported a different issue, with the computer failing to boot properly after the installation is complete.
Some Vista users have received the updates through being either a TechNet or Microsoft Developer Network subscriber, ahead of the general release which is planned for mid-March.
Microsoft has told Computer World: "We are currently looking into this but have no additional information to share at this time. We apologise for any inconvenience this may be causing our users."
